Inspired by the “I Spy” exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., I was overcome with the urge to photograph people in venues of public transportation. This first installment was taken on the Metro system of Washington D.C. The “I Spy” exhibit, by the way, is great. The photographers chosen truly honed their skills to produce amazing street portraits.
My overall goal, as the title states, is to capture people during moments in between other moments of their life. In between work and home; school and work; lunch and dinner; love and hate; life and death. The Moments In Between, captured while at the patience and mercy of public transportation.
A little about the technical side of these photographs. All of them were shot with the camera slung off of one shoulder, and without looking through the viewfinder to frame and compose the image. Some call this “shooting from the hip.” I call it not drawing attention to one’s self. More or less, I wanted appear as a “casual tourist” just riding the subway (just ignore the giant lens and camera body). I placed myself as close to the subjects as possible, positioned myself appropriately to frame and focus what I wanted to capture, and casually “checked my camera” while releasing the shutter. I used a 28mm, 50mm, and 135mm for these, with the 50mm being the most used.
